AD&D Deities Sorted By Classes and Interests
You've probably noticed that there are perhaps hundreds of "gods" from which to choose, and very little help from the rules as to how to choose one for you.  However, there are some clues, usually buried in the text, and characters with particular interests may be able to connect with a particular god with a little help in finding those interests.  There is no easy way in the rule books to track down these gods; but this meager beginning at such a listing may be of help.  This page has been organized to collect the gods by their interests, and connect them to their descriptions in their pantheons.  Find the appropriate interest, click on any god that you fancy, and use the back button to return to this page if you wish to examine more.

The first listing of gods includes those who are specifically connected to a class in the game.  Most classes do not have gods connected to them; however, for those which do, it can be very useful to know of such a connection.  However, I have resisted the temptation of connecting "magic users" and "gods of magic", or "fighters" and "war gods"--these things are obvious enough, and at the same time do not have the type of exclusivity suggested by them, as many war gods have worshippers who are far from the battle.  After that, interests which are not class-based are covered.  However, even though a class may have some deities specifically connected to it, the player is encouraged to examine the interests section as well--there are far more gods with interests in "forest" or "nature" than are specifically connected to "rangers", and the player may find a deity more to his character's views (and the situation in his game) by examining these related interests.  Some of these deities may be limited in other ways, such as the alignment of their worshippers; however, the aligment given is that of the god, not necessarily a limitation on his worshippers, so the descriptions should be checked for such limits.  Similarly, deities who belong to a racial pantheon, such as elves, may have some worshippers who are not of that race, so again the descriptions should be compared.  Finally, although many of the gods are listed under several headings for their several interests, the listings are not complete nor exclusive--gods may have interests under which they are not listed, even if the interest appears in this index.  There is another index of the gods which divides them by alignment; they are also sorted by pantheon directly.

Non-human characters may wish to check for deities related to their race.  Some races have pantheons of their own.  Some are special interests of gods in other pantheons.  The player should check both lists, as some races (elves, notably) are a special interest of gods of some pantheons as well as having gods of their own.

A few important caveats should be considered.  In selecting a deity, the player (or referee) should not rely on this list as the ultimate definition of the god, but should examine the descriptions of the gods and their pantheons.  It is easy to make the mistake of assuming that just because a god is listed here as sharing an interest with the character, he would be a good choice.  But it may be that the interest is for the god a minor one, overshadowed by other concerns with which the character would disagree strongly.  It is also clearly the case that deities are in general categories which they would define differently--Aphrodite, the passionate mistress of secret trysts, and Berronar, the mother goddess of the dwarfs, are both goddesses of love and of beauty, but it is doubtful whether they would agree on the meaning of either of those words; Athena's concept of the noble skilled warrior does not at all mesh with Ares' glorification of gore, although both are war gods in the same pantheon; and gods related to suffering would include those who cause it and those who relieve it, and some who do both.  Also, general categories are by nature non-specific.  All gods of justice are listed under law, although it is clear that not all law is just nor all justice lawful, even among the gods--it would be too difficult to distinguish one from the other, and in most cases it is not necessary.  Finally, a god's multiple interests may be inclusive or exclusive or both-that is, a war god who is god of archers and fletchers may be interested in all warriors, all archers, and all fletchers, or only in those who are warrior archers who make their own arrows, or in all fletchers and all warrior archers, but not archers who merely hunt.  In short, be sure to understand the god.

There are also nuances of pantheons of which the player may wish to be aware.  Some have very strict rules concerning worshippers, clerics, places of worship, spells which may be granted, and other requirements.  Checking first can save problems later.

By Class.  Check interests also, since some classes are too general to include here.

These are the interests covered in this index.  The player and referee are again reminded of the important caveats, especially here, and encouraged to check out the deities and their pantheons fully before deciding on a specific selection.  The player should also be aware that classes, listed above, may also be considered interests, and should check those which might be related to his character, even if his character is not the specific named class.

M. J. Young's Dungeons & Dragons Materials
Collection of such pages as the much-praised Alignment Quiz, What is an RPG? (excerpted from Multiverser), the highly valued Confessions of a Dungeons & Dragons™ Addict, along with special rules and player aids in both written and computer formats, this site was highly praised by RAWS, linked by Gary Gygax, and is worth a look even if you don't like what you found here.

The best new role playing game....

The Multiverser Information Center
The complexity of creating a D&D character always reminds me of how much simpler it is to play
Multiverser®, the game which incorporates all other games, all other worlds, everything imaginable, with nothing else to buy.

A consideration of time travel....

Temporal Anomalies in Popular Movies
There are enough time travel films out there now that most of the things which could go wrong in time have been shown on the silver screen.  This page applies a new conception of how time works (discussed in the
Multiverser® game system to help referees sort out game scenarios in which player characters travel in time) to unraveling the most popular of such movies.  An Event Horizon Hot Spot and Sci Fi Weekly Site of the Week which has won the author national recognition as an authority on time travel in fiction.
