Previous chapter:   Chapter 137:  Brown 156

As the sun was rising, Shella again created an invisible shelter and conjured breakfast for them, and they settled down to sleep the day.  They were rudely awakened around noon when the spell lapsed and the heat came down on them, for which she apologized (Slade thought unnecessarily) before creating another.  Everyone slept another few hours, but it was not really practical attempting to sleep through the full daylight hours, and Slade was awake looking out at the empty world for quite a while before Shella conjured another meal and everyone began packing to continue their hike.

It’s a good thing, he thought, that we know we have somewhere to go.  This empty land could drive a man to despair.  Joe sighted on a few stars to confirm their heading, and they resumed the trip.

Slade wondered what the world had awaiting them.  Shella had been able to see what she said was a city, but she admitted it was unlike any city she had previously seen.  That was not terribly surprising.  She had seen the castles of her home world, and the medieval cities of Prince Aquivar and King Morgan, and the domed futuristic cities of the vampire world, but that was the limit of her experience.  The nearest they had come to a city in the ghosts and shades world was the tent camps of the white armies.  So it was a city, but whether it was like cities Slade had known, or cities from the past, or something completely different, he could not venture to guess.  He could only walk, and wonder.

As the sky lightened they again looked for a place to camp.  There wasn’t much to this, as they really only needed ground comfortable enough to sleep, as everything else was provided by magic.
