Previous chapter:  Chapter 126:  Beam 38

It was a busy week, starting with a state funeral for the Amir, then an investiture for his son as the heir to the throne, and then Derek’s wedding to Button Nose, now openly known as Vashti.  New security arrangements were being developed for the Calipha, but since Vashti was getting married and Scheherazade was taking over supervision of her father’s estates, things would be very different.  Still, Derek and Vash were going to make their primary residence in his room in the wing of the palace he had occupied with the other versers since their arrival, visiting the Amir’s manor from time to time, possibly going down river to his palace and holdings downstream occasionally.

Kondor was surprised at his own feelings about the wedding.  When Slade and Shella had told him they had married, he didn’t really see the point, since they weren’t going to need children to carry their lineage forward.  However, there was just something right about Derek and Vash, like they belonged together.  Maybe, he thought, it was because they were both, at least from his perspective, kids, and kids had these passions, these bondings that joined them, friendship and love and camaraderie.  However, when he reflected on it, he realized that this was also true of Shella and Slade, that they seemed almost made for each other, and whether that was true (which he doubted) or simply something that happened because they had each formed to the other in their time together, it seemed that they were right for each other in a way that no one else could have been for either of them.

For himself, he was comfortable being alone.  Of course, he wasn’t really alone anymore--he had a roommate now, as Zeke had come with him, and he suspected they were going to work together for a while.  It was going to take some adjusting on his part, but then, friendships always did.  He’d have to wait and see where it went.
