Chapter 60: Beam 146
Table of Contents
Previous chapter: Hastings 247
“You took a big risk,” Warren said, “rescuing me.”
Beam poked at the fading coals with a stick, sending sparks into the smoke, then shrugged.
“I don’t really see it that way,” he said. “I mean, Ashleigh was going to break you out with or without my help, and to my mind the biggest risk was that she would be killed. The best way to prevent that was to lead the rescue myself, have my team work together. So I really did it to protect her.”
The man nodded. “Well, all the same, thank you.”
They sat in silence for a while. The smoke from the fire made Beam think he’d like a cigarette, but he didn’t want to add the tobacco smoke smell to the mix in case someone was looking for them. Then he spoke again.
“The problem now,” he said, “is that we have to figure out what we’re all doing next.”
“Next?”
“You can’t really go home; you probably shouldn’t even stop home, and neither should any of us, because there’s a good chance soldiers will be watching the house. But somehow we’re going to have to get your wife out, and find somewhere for you to relocate—and we’re going to have to find a place for ourselves, too.”
“What do you suggest?” Warren asked.
Staring into space, the white-haired man responded, “I’m still thinking about it.”
