Previous chapter: Beam 178
“Cap’n?”
“Mmm?” Kondor grunted without opening his eyes.
“I think you maybe should see this? I’ve never seen a shooting star that big.”
“It’s probably just--”
“Oh, I understand that they’re usually meteors hitting the atmosphere. I’m just concerned that this one seems to be lasting quite a while.”
He opened his eyes. He also relaxed his feelings.
“That’s not a rock,” he said. “There’s a verser traveling with it. You’re looking at atmospheric reentry; Derek is bringing down the ship.”
“So, that means he succeeded?”
“One way or another. He might have persuaded the visitors to accept terms of peaceful coexistence here; or he might have decided to do something else.”
“I suppose we could ask?”
“Good idea.” Derek? he thought. There was no response.
“I got nothin’,” Zeke said.
“No, me neither. I’m worried, because I can feel him up there, but I don’t get a response.” He continued to stare at the descending ship. “Maybe he’s just too busy to answer. Landing a ship like that must require a lot of attention.” He hadn’t persuaded himself, but he continued watching.
