Chapter 16: Takano 89

Previous chapter: Cooper 5
Tommy prayed as she listened to the question by Varlax. The lady was the moving spirit of the council, and she had hit on an issue that Tommy had wondered about. At the same time, Tommy wondered if this was the right attitude.
“Ask that again, Varlax.” She pitched her voice so that the slightly over a hundred gathered around her campfire could hear her clearly. Varlax nodded, and copied her. The lady was a quick study.
“Jesus told the dissai, uh, his friends to get a netful of fish. You said a net was a device for scooping lots of fish from the water. Why can’t we pray for the same thing if we build a net?” The others in the tribe looked with interest to Tommy who distinctly felt her lack of understanding. She had heard of the phrase, the blind leading the blind, and she thought she had new insight into it right at the moment.
Some words came to her.
“I don’t know much myself. But we have enough to eat for now.” More strongly she spoke. “We don’t need it now.”
“But did they need it then? I mean, Jesus was already cooking a fish by the shore for them.”
Tommy searched her mind, and offered a quick prayer, but in the end all she could say was an unhappy admission of not knowing the answer. The tribe gathered itself to their feet in quiet, and left walking through the thick layers of brown leaves, and under the leafless branches. This left Tommy praying.
“Jesus, we have enough fish and deer for today, but the fruit is almost gone. Another two weeks at most, and that’s if we scrimp. What are we going to do?” No insight, no movement in her spirit was felt. No sudden idea, or thought not her own came to her. Nor did any Bible verse save ‘trust in the Lord’. She resolved to do so, but her worry hardly receded.
