Previous chapter:  Takano 104

The older brother holding the rifle seemed to have appointed himself spokesman for the group, and answered Derek.  “I don’t know that you pose any threat.  As I see it, there are already nine of us, if you count my mother--and believe me, you don’t want to fail to count her--and only five of you.  Plus, in this neighborhood, if whites and Chinamen pick a fight with us, the neighbors will be here in minutes.  You can’t win.”

“I think you need to adjust your count a bit,” Derek said.  “I’m a twice-honored hero of the Twin Rivers Caliphate, an agent of the British Secret Service, the rescuer of my people, a champion in the Throne World Combat Tournament in both weaponless and primitive weapons, and the divinely-appointed protector of this city--and while that perhaps means nothing to you, I assure you I am not someone to trifle with.”

He extended his right hand in a fast motion and using his telekinesis snatched his laser rifle from the loose grip of the startled brother.  As it reached his hands, he released the safety and with careful aim took out a piece of the railing around the front porch.

He could hear the three men in the road running away.

“Now, if you would like to see what this laser blaster can do to human flesh, or what other hidden powers God has given me, continue to defy me.”

“Momma?” the terrified boy said.

Grumpily, the woman replied, “Get his things.  All of them.”

“The money, too?”

“The money, too.  What good is money if he kills us all and destroys our house?”

The boys disappeared into the house; the woman stayed on the porch.  She glared at Derek.  “I hope you’re as good as you think,” she said.  “Yule is comin’.  My boys are nothin’ compared to what you’re gonna see then.  May be the Rougarou will come for you.”

Pretending to ignore the threat, Derek and his companions scooped up the stolen property.  He paused to feel for the scriff, and to make sure that Mister Hunter’s cook pot was there, then said.  “Thank you so much.  I trust it won’t happen again.”

They headed back to the house.
