Previous chapter: Cooper 30
“Well,” Tommy said in answer to the question, “how did the six of you get your jobs, originally?”
The question was how to replace Boronir as a Team Leader and member of the Council. Varlax and Gram had come to her for advice.
“Well, Gram and I,” Varlax recalled, “were appointed by the emperor. He picked us because we had spoken up after he killed our Manner and one of our Tennans--it was their fault, I guess, since they pretty much attacked him trying to take over his territory. He also appointed Tamis, who was our surviving Tennan, but he stayed behind--”
“Boronir was a Tennan in a tribe that joined us near the end of our exodus,” Gram continued. “Sylwi was his tribe’s Ner, and Peep was ours. Lauren appointed them to be team leaders.”
Trying to recall who was missing from the list, “And what about,” Tommy asked, “Torin?”
“Oh!” Gram said. “I had forgotten. At the time we didn’t have team leaders, only group leaders, and since Tamis had left it was only the two of us. Emperor Beam told us to talk to the remaining members of Tamis’ group, to see if they wanted to recommend someone, and if not we should choose.”
“And?”
Varlax continued. “It’s a bit fuzzy in my memory, but it seems to me that there were three people who wanted the job, and the group seemed to think Torin was the best choice, so we went with him.
Nodding, Tommy said, “That sounds like a good answer. Talk to the people in that group, and then as group leaders decide who you think would make the best team leader. I mean, we could make it more elaborate and have nominations and elections, but there are a lot of complications in that, so let’s first see whether we can resolve it easily. Good?”
“Thank you, advisor,” Varlax said.
“Yes, thank you,” Gram added, and they left.
Tommy wished all their problems were so simple.
