Chapter 103:  Cooper 33

Previous chapter:  Brown 318

As the Sword of Justice came alight, the confidence faded from the face of Major Pain.  Perhaps he hadn’t known what it could do, or perhaps he had thought that the new Mister Justice wouldn’t yet know how to use the sword.

“What are you going to do with that?” he asked.

“I’m going to pierce unto the dividing asunder both of soul and spirit,” he replied, remembering the words from Hebrews 4:12.  Timothy had called it something like suppressing the spirit, according to Tell.  This could be that.

He doubted that Pain knew what that meant, but the villain paled visibly, and released the woman.  He raised both hands.  Still, his recent training with Red had made him cognizant of the appearance of readiness, and although his opponent was clearly frightened, he had not actually surrendered, and was feigning surrender while being ready to strike.

He kept the sword readied, but reduced it from fire to light, the red glow that was not flame.  He lowered it while maintaining his own readiness, and stepped forward.

Suddenly Pain moved, lashing out with his right hand.  Cooper was ready, and went to block the strike with his sword.  Again, though, the sword passed through the arm.  This time the arm went limp, and Pain screamed–not in pain, but in fear.  Taking advantage of the moment, Cooper grabbed the villain’s left wrist with his own left hand, yanked him around, and pulled the hand up behind Pain’s back.

“Let’s go,” he said, still holding the sword, and he marched his prisoner out through the front door.

“You’ll find his accomplice on the floor inside, drugged, and there are some people who might need medical attention,” he said as he delivered his first supervillain into the custody of the police.
