Previous chapter: Brown 321
As Brian got out of his garb and packed it in the brown paper bag he kept under his clothes, he began to grasp just how awkward keeping his identity secret was becoming. He could easily fit the outfit, belt, and gun in the bag, but the hilt of the sword stuck out the top even if it was not in the scabbard. He decided he was going to have to obtain something like a duffel bag, much like those Major Pain had been using to rob the bank. Perhaps an army surplus store would be the place for that, and hopefully it wouldn’t take too much from his budget. After all, he didn’t really have an income stream, and he was working on his third gold coin.
Still, he had more money than Tommy; that was certain. Lunch would be his treat.
Once he left the bus stop he relaxed and quickly found the direction toward the other verser. He realized that she didn’t feel any different from the versers back at Umak Tek; there were only two there when he visited, and they were rarely separate from each other, but it was evident that he, at least, couldn’t tell one verser from another by this sense. Fortunately, there was only one out there.
It was only a few minutes before he saw her on the road ahead, still in the deerskin jacket and fur hat, but now equipped with a large backpack on a frame complete with such camping gear as a mess kit, canteen, and sleeping bag. It seemed a lot for a girl her size, and although she might be stronger than she looked, she seemed to be struggling under the weight.
He waved when he saw her, realizing that while she looked essentially the same but for the added luggage, the last time she saw him he was disguised. She raised a hand to wave back, and he realized that she was carrying something else, something that was as alien to this world as they were.
She had a laptop case.
