Previous chapter: Cooper 38
Tommy was not particularly thrilled with her first day of internship. The woman to whom she had been assigned seemed to think that the most important thing for her to know, apart from the location of the bathroom, was where the coffee pot was and how the top people drank their coffee. There was also a cafeteria open for a couple hours during lunch which had free coffee and donuts from eight to eleven and again from two to seven, for people arriving early, working overtime, or taking breaks. She availed herself of a hot lunch--meat loaf, green beans, and roasted potatoes--which was not particularly good but was cheap and filling and would save her a bit of money later because she could get away with a light supper. She had become accustomed to eating less recently, which was a skill she thought might help in the short term here, at least.
On the ride home she asked Cooper his supper plans, but he indicated that he was going to have to find a place to buy some decent work clothes now that he had seen what people wore to the office. He joked that there was a saying, that you should dress for the job you wanted, not the job you had, so maybe he should go in as Mister Justice, but she pointed out that he already had that job.
His mention of clothes reminded her that her own selection was a bit thin. She had the blue skirt and the red skirt, and a blouse to match each of them. She could get away with her party dress, maybe on Friday. Then she would be wearing shorts and a T to go to the laundry over the weekend to get it all ready again for next week. She thought she had been busy when she had to hunt and gather to feed herself and her fire, but she had managed to find time to practice her martial arts and acrobatics. Here it looked like she was going to be kept rather busier.
That was foolish, she thought. You don’t find time; you make it.
Still, she took another long hot bath. She figured even if she took ten of them, that many in a year was not excessive even if they were all in the same week. Then she dressed for bed and ate the light supper she had ordered. Watching the television crossed her mind, but instead she pulled Lauren’s Bible out of her pack and thumbed through it to find where she had left off. She read for about half an hour, and then prayed for a few minutes. It struck her that Jesus sometimes prayed all night, but since she had to work all day tomorrow that did not seem a good choice for her tonight, at least.
Her phone call would come at seven tomorrow, and she would easily be ready to go with Cooper’s cab by eight. She was going to suggest he put it to eight-fifteen, which would still get them there early but wouldn’t have them standing in the hall so long, but his departure to buy clothes had knocked the idea out of her head and she hadn’t seen him since. As she relaxed she realized he must be back--the scriff sense pointed toward his cabin--but she wasn’t going to get dressed again or go outside in her housecoat, so she would simply see him in the morning.
