Previous chapter: Cooper 51
Pierre came by that night. “I stopped at the restaurant, but I thought you’d want to know,” he said. “Bishop Stevens gave an earful to the president of the bank, who apparently insisted he knew nothing of this and would put a stop to it immediately. He says he expects some executive is going to lose his cushy job tomorrow.”
“That’s good news,” Derek said, and called, “Vashti, the bank problem has been solved.”
Coming from the kitchen she said, “That’s good news. It’s what we expected, but of course it’s good to know. I think we’ll be giving thanks tonight.”
“Would you like to come in?” Derek asked.
“No,” Pierre said. “I borrowed the Rambler again, and need to get it home. What do we have planned for tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow?”
“It’s Fat Tuesday, or in French, Mardi Gras?”
“I don’t know. Do you think there will be trouble? I mean, the only other file we found was on Mister Scratch himself, and it contained really nothing useful.”
“I think he has about thirty hours to prevent this town from celebrating Ash Wednesday and starting the deprivations of Lent. We’ve defeated his monsters, but I don’t know that he won’t try something.”
Derek nodded. “We should be out there, and ready. Pray in the morning, and we’ll meet for lunch and go from there.”
Maurice said, “We got a parade in the mornin’ we’z supposed to do.”
“Right,” Derek said. “I’d forgotten.”
Pierre nodded and said, “I’ll pick you up. See you here, then.”
“G’night,” Derek said, and it was echoed by the others.
