Previous chapter:  Brown 347

Tommy and Brian had left the Browns in the house when they went to work.  “So, what do you think?” they said simultaneously, and both laughed.

“You first,” Brian said.

“Well, for someone who seems to be as, what, impressive? as he is, he seems awfully modest.  Even when he talks about the really great things he’s done, it’s all in a matter-of-fact sort of way.  I’m like, I can’t believe you managed to do that, and he’s like, so then I fixed the alien spaceships so we could use them to attack the mothership and crash it into the ocean, like it was something any of us could have done.”

Brian nodded.  “I think I like that about him.  He’s probably better than any super, maybe any two supers, in this entire world, but he doesn’t act like he is.  I think he genuinely doesn’t think he is.  He’s just an ordinary guy who happens to be highly educated and to have unusual abilities.  I think about how powerful he is, how smart he is, and I get uncomfortable--but I know that he doesn’t think that way.”

She could see that, and nodded.  “What about her?”

“Oh, she’s quiet.  She obviously thinks the world of him.  I’m surprised she hasn’t boosted his ego, but he treats her like a princess--”

“She is a princess,” she interjected.

“Right.  But she’s also his wife, and he treats her like she’s special.  They have a remarkably good relationship.”

“Indeed.  Sometimes I think she’s very lucky to be married to him, but then I think, no, he’s lucky to have her.  Maybe both are true.”

“What do you think of his story of them fighting the devil for New Orleans?”

She shrugged.  “Why not?  Lauren told stories of fighting vampires more than once, to protect Philadelphia, Camelot, and the entire world.  Why couldn’t Derek face a similar fight?  I mean, it’s not like he’s overmatched.”

“And if God wants to make him stronger, he needs to face him against tougher adversaries.”

“Which might be what He’s doing to us, yes?”

Cooper nodded, but they had reached the office, and went to their respective desks.
