Previous chapter:  Brown 373

Bill yelled again, and collapsed on the ground.  His arms covered his head, and he rocked and shouted.  One of the law enforcers sneered down at the ground toward Bill.

“Maintenance.”  He then turned a hard eye on Beam who was covering him with a rifle.  “Put the weapon down, or even if you shoot me, my partner will shoot you.  And then other bailiffs will come, and tote you to jail while you’re not in-combat capable.”

Beam could not help himself.  He snorted, and then laughed, and Bron and Sophia joined in.  Enraged, the two bailiffs fast-drew their foam pistols, and Beam shot the first one in the chest.  The second shot him in the chest, and the foam dart, six inches long, hit him, and bounced off leaving a large blue dot on his shirt.

The injured bailiff stood with a look of complete perplexity on his face.

“He, he, shot me.  It hurts,” he gasped in dismayed shock.  Shouts and yells were heard from all directions as the loud sound of the rifle died away.

“Of course, he shot you.  You’re supposed to lie down now.  But I got him.”

“Oh, O.K.”  The injured bailiff got himself down to the ground, and once that was accomplished, the other bailiff turned to glare at Beam.

“You’re dead.  You’re supposed to lie down for four hours.  Now move.  Get to it,” he ordered.  “The rest of you, you’re under arrest.”  He waved his foam dart pistol at the others.  Even Dawn’s eyes were wide as she turned to Beam with a questioning look on her face.  Bill continued to yell.

Throwing the bolt on the rifle, Beam said, “I don’t think you understand.  Where I come from, dead is real.”  Then he pulled the trigger and shot the second officer also in the chest.  The dumbfounded man touched the wound, looked at the blood on his fingers, and fell to the floor.

“I think he fainted,” Bron said.

“I think so,” Beam replied, “but give him time.  If they don’t have real guns, do they have real medics?”
